The following list of frequently asked questions and answers was compiled to meet your information needs.
General
Q: How much ceiling room is required to store SKYFOLD®?
A: SKYFOLD® is remarkably compact. In many instances, a folding ratio of 10:1 is achieved. This remarkable feature allows SKYFOLD® to be stored in most existing ceiling spaces.
Q: When stored away, does SKYFOLD® take up any floor space?
A: When not in use, SKYFOLD® rests in its folded position, invisibly, in the ceiling, requiring absolutely no floor space. In fact, in many installations, it is not even possible to tell if and where the SKYFOLD® walls are located, until they are operated.
Q: What are the electrical requirements of SKYFOLD®?
A: SKYFOLD® requires a three-phase power supply commonly available in all building.
Q: What type of structural support is required for SKYFOLD®?
A: SKYFOLD® takes less structural steel than conventional operable walls since it is a static load. SKYFOLD®’s loading on the structural steel is always evenly distributed across its width. SKYFOLD®’s entire weight is never concentrated as a single point load on the structure. SKYFOLD® weighs approximately 8 lbs/ft², significantly less than conventional operable walls.
Q: How is access achieved through SKYFOLD®?
A: SKYFOLD® is completely and fully automatic. If access is required when SKYFOLD® is in the down position, it only needs to be opened partially to allow access.
Q: Can SKYFOLD® be used for exterior wall?
A: At present, SKYFOLD® is not designed to be used as an exterior wall.
Skyfold Mirage®
Q: What sizes are available for the Skyfold Mirage® ?
A: Skyfold Mirage® can be installed with fixed ceiling height of up to 16’-0”. There is no practical limit to how long (wide) Skyfold Mirage can be.
Q: What types of finishes are available for Skyfold Mirage® ?
A: Panel inserts can accept almost anything up to 1 5/8” thick, including glass, plexiglass, Lexan®, bullet proof glass, frosted glass and more.
Skyfold® Classic™
Q: How does SKYFOLD® operate ?
A: Skyfold is fully automatic. At the simple turn of a key, SKYFOLD® either opens or closes, smoothly and quietly. There is no manual intervention.
Q: How many different finishes can be applied onto the SKYFOLD® Classic™ panels ?
A: Our finishes include, but are not limited to vinyl, fabric, stainless steel, customer supplied materials, wood, veneer, et. The finish can not exceed 1/8'' thickness. For standard design criteria, the finish can not exceed 0.1 lbs per square foot. Heavier material will have to be approved by Skyfold®. Our finishes are "Railroaded" onto panels, in other words, they are applied horizontally (lengthwise), not vertically, as in usually the custom with the wall finishes.
Q: Does SKYFOLD® Classic™ require any tracks or seals on the floor or side walls?
A: Part of the beauty and elegance of SKYFOLD® Classic™ is that it does not require any floor or wall tracks or seals. All acoustical components are integrated into the SKYFOLD® Classic™ wall. Once SKYFOLD® Classic™ is in the down position, acoustical seals automatically engage against the floor and side walls. The only SKYFOLD® Classic™ elements that are located on the side are the operating key switches.
Q: What sizes are available for SKYFOLD® Classic™ ?
A: SKYFOLD® Classic™ can be installed with fixed ceiling heights as high as 30 feet. Furthermore, there is no practical limit to how long (wide) SKYFOLD® Classic™ can be. SKYFOLD® Classic™ widths of over 100 feet are readily accommodated, without any loss of function.
Q: How high is the acoustical performance of SKYFOLD® Classic™ ?
A: SKYFOLD® Classic™ has an excellent acoustic STC rating of 51. A standard SKYFOLD® Classic™ partition is 10 1/4" thick with two independent planes of steel panels separated by a 8 3/4" air space that creates an anechoic chamber. It also has 1½" insulation on the back of each panel. The combination of these elements creates an exceptional sound barrier that must be heard to be believed. SKYFOLD® Classic™ has been approved by many top architectural firms in the world for use in spaces where sound control is critical.
Q: What are SKYFOLD® Classic™’s fire and smoke properties ?
A: SKYFOLD® Classic™ and its components have been designed for excellent flame and smoke properties. Every component is rated to a Class “A” fire rating. However, SKYFOLD® Classic™ is not designed to be a fire barrier.
